Sant Joan Funicular Railway is the steepest funicular in Spain. Located in Montserrat, near Barcelona, this funicular railway was originally built in 1918 and then modified in 1926 to increase the capacity. In 1997, the funicular was modernized to have panoramic cars with transparent roofs. With a maximum capacity of 60 passengers per car, the Sant Joan Funicular connects the monastery called Santa Maria de Montserrat and the upper terminus of the Montserrat Rack Railway with sacred sites, viewpoints, and walking trails.
