Santa María Del Mar - Review

This is an ancient church located in the Ribera district of Barcelona. The Gothic style architecture makes this church an extremely impressive tourist site. This imposing church has huge columns and facades that inspire awe. The cutwork, stained-glass windows and the carved sky-lights are absolutely breathtaking. The beautiful sculptures also depict how the church was built.

The slender stone columns are famous around the world due to their unique design and they give the whole church a very gothic and striking appearance. The beautiful tall windows make it very well lit during the day. It is best to visit this church in the day as the architecture truly shines through then.

Santa María Del Mar, Barcelona Reviews

  • What a stunning basilica. Another one that's difficult to appreciate just because it's surrounded by buildings on all sides. It's very mind boggling to think that this basilica was on the coast (hence its name), as now its quite far and no longer has a view on the sea. Worth entering and appreciating its size as well as its stain glass.

  • Not as famous as some of the other churches in Barcelona, but easily the most beautiful. The graceful open space with light filtering through the stained glass is nothing less than majestic. Free to enter during weekday mornings.

  • Lovely visit. Purchased tickets and selected time slot about two weeks before our visit. Rooftops are definitely worth it but more strenuous than expected. My 68 year old grandmother ended up staying downstairs exploring the basilica while I went to the top. Such and amazing view and our guide was filled with knowledge and history about Barcelona.

  • Beautiful and welcoming. It was very hot and many ladies showed up with skirts above knees, shoulders uncovered and casual beach sandals. Nobody was turned away. Beautiful ceiling, pillars, stained glass windows and lots of pews. The front of the church is cordoned off. A wedding was taking place.

  • Nice building, the animals in the outdoor section of the cathedral are very nice. There are many different chambers aligning the walls dedicated to different figures in history. There is an almost underground chapel which is accessed by steps. The stained glass windows are very carefully and skilfully decorated, and look very well. The inside of the church is constructed using bare bricks, which doesn't sound particularly pleasent to the eye, but surprisingly has an extremely nice effect. The cathedral is located in the centre of the city of Barcelona, Spain's most highly industrialised city, but is located in the older Gothic quarter of the city. Unfortunately, there are many pick-pockets, so mind your belongings. It is overall a lovely and extremely impressive building and I would highly recommend it.
