The San Bernardino County is blessed with the exquisite geological formation on the Calico Peaks range. The Rainbow Basin is located around 8 miles north of Barstow in Mojave Desert and has been designated a National Natural Landmark. It is a mixture of private and public land with extraordinary rock formations. Its fossil beds provide information about the life during the mid Miocene Epoch. The Basin lies above the massive Batholith formed from quartz monzonite. You will see sedimentary rocks composed of sandstone, siltstone, conglomerate and limestone are found in abundance. You can camp on the Canyon Campground nearby. Desert Tortoise and Vipers are common in this region. Fossils cannot be collected without permission as this is a geologically important area.
