Basel is blessed with a black asphalt fountain piece know as the Carnival Fountain or the Tinguely Fountain created by the famous artist Jean Tinguely in 1977. It was built as a gift to the city with its nine sculptures that were constructed from the parts of pieces of the equipment of the Old Theatre that stood at this spot. The puppet-like iron eminences are in constant low-powered motion and seem to be in perfect harmonical conversation with each other, just as the mimers, actors and performers did in the theatre at this spot. The rectangle fountain with a floor area of 16-19m has ten water-sprouting pieces named dr Theaterkopf, d'Spinne, dr Waggler, d'Fontääne, dr Spritzer, dr Suuser, dr Wäädel, dr Schuufler, s'Seechter and dr Querpfyffer.
