This isn’t the greatest fine arts museum ever, but it lends the city of Bath a good deal of atmosphere in any case. It’s located in the Sydney Pleasure Gardens, which used to be one of Jane Austen’s more favoured strolling areas. Once upon a time the garden was in daily use by the rich and noble as a gathering point, and special effort was put into making it homely, and it was lit up by thousands and thousands of candles.
It’s been featured in various movies, even the Bollywood movie Cheeni Kum. The house is another good spot to end up when it’s raining in Bath. The collection of paintings is quite nice, particularly the Gainsboroughs. You’ll see Chinese porcelain, silverwork, books, furniture, and may portraits.
