Kunming Lake is an artificial lake that was created in 1291 by Guo Shoujing, who was a renowned astronomer and engineer in his time. This artificial reservoir lies alongside Longevity Valley and occupies a major space of the Summer Palace grounds. It covers an area of about 2.2 square kilometers, and has been inspired by Dianchi Lake, which is a natural lake in the vicinity. You would want to take a dip in the lake for it is only as deep as 1.5 meters. You can enjoy the enchanting view while strolling over the 6 bridges on Kunming Lake, the largest one being the 17-Arch Bridge, which connects the eastern shore with South Lake Island.
