The church has seen quite an evolution. The original church in this location was destroyed when the Turks moved in in 1521. Later, in the 18th century, the building was used as a gunpowder storage, and then as a military church. Technically, it could be counted as Belgrade’s oldest church. It’s inside Belgrade’s fortress complex.

The church has a terrific iconostasis. The wall paintings are superb too. More unusual though, are the chandeliers – they are made of spent cartridges, cannon ammunition, officers’ swords and the pistols of soldiers from the Macedonian (Thessaloniki) Front.

On the exterior, they’ve allowed an attractive spread of vines to creep and grow along the walls. It gives the church a very fairy tale look. The church is on a cliffside just below the main fortress.
