Bellary Fort is perched on a hill top in Bellary, Karnataka. Divided into two forts, the Upper and Lower, the history of the fort dates back to the 16th century. The Upper fort was built by the feudatory chief of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hanumappa Nayakaa. The Lower fort came into being after Haider Ali overthrew the then ruler. Legend has it that he appointed a French architecture to design the Lower fort, and renovate the Upper. After construction, it dawned upon him that the hill in front of the forts gave them strategic military disadvantage. Infuriated, he ordered for the architect to be hanged. A tomb lies today near the East gate of the fort, which is believed to either be of the Frenchman, or a Muslim saint. Like any other fort of India, the charm is irresistible, and if you are a history-buff, nothing can keep you away from this place.
