Bebelplatz is known for its glorious look as well as inglorious past. It was named after the founder of Social Democratic Party of Germany, August Bebel. The square was formed in the year 1740 with plans of constructing various buildings such as the Opera House, Royal City Palace and also an academy building. Today it houses the Opera House as well as a library and palace belonging to the Humboldt University. It makes for a very interesting site as this is where the Nazis burned all the national literature. It is a beautiful square to walk in, it is said to be one of the best in the city. Partially, you can attribute its condition today to the amazing location of being situated over Unter Den Linden and partially because the buildings here are a complete site to watch. Also remember to go pray at the St Hedwig’s Cathedral which is located here.
- Entry is free.
- The square is open for 24 hours. You can visit the place any time of the day.
- Nearest bus station: Staatsoper
- Nearby U-bahn station: U Französische Str.
