A little before the stroke of every hour, a hoard of people flock to the clock tower in Bern to watch the puppet show that takes place when the oldest grandfather clock of this world gongs away to tell the time to all those who will listen.
Built in 1530, the astronomical clock has been Bern’s official time keeper since! Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the old clock tower is a landmark of the city and a popular attraction.
- Since the clock is located in an open area in the Al Stadt, it was no business hours apart from the tour.
- While you can view the clock from the outside for free, a tour of the inner workings of the clock requires a ticket.
- From the months of April to October, there’s a tour that takes place daily at 2:30 pm.
- From November to March, tours are available on request.

This is possibly one of the top items on anyones list to see when in Bern. It's an amazing structure and is gorgeous in both day and night. The craftsmanship is spectacular. Definitely walk by this and grab some pictures
If you decide to walk from the train station it won't take you longer than 10 minutes to reach it. On the hour you can also experience how its mechanism works. You also have the option to go on tours if you have some time and want to know more about this landmark which in my opinion should top your list during your visit to Switzerland's capital!
This is a real landmark in the historic city of Bern sitting at a main intersection at the center of the old town with a number of tram stations around. The place is saturated with history and valuable architecture. It is not just a city clock; it is more of an urban feature, a three dimensional piece of architecture which you can go through and experience from different sides... It is simply unique.
