Lingaraja Temple - Review

Located in the midst of several other ancient temples of Bhubaneshwar, Lingaraja temple stands out because of its remarkable architectural work. The temple is said to be dedicated to Lord Shiva. As you look at the exterior walls of the temple, you can see the intricate craftsmanship on it. The artistic sculptures carved on the red stone walls of the temple are surely going to put you in awe of it. It is believed that the temple dates back to the 11th century and it follows Kalinga architectural style. However, some people also say that a portion of the temple was built way back in 6th century. Inspite of the confusion regarding the establishment of the temple, a visit to this temple is a must, especially if you are fond of ancient architecture.

While exploring the vast complex of the temple, don’t miss out to crane your neck and see the 55 meters tall spire of the temple that dominates Bhubaneshwar’s skyline.

It is the main temple of Bhubaneswar and it is one of the oldest temples of the city. This is dedicated to Lord Tribhuvaneshwar. It was built by Lalatukeshari in 617-657 AD. Although the present form of this temple was made in 1090-1104, but some parts of it are more than 1400 years old. The description of this temple also comes in the 6th century articles. It is a religious story that Parvati, the goddess who killed two ferocious monsters named 'Latti' and 'Vasa', did it here. After the battle, he was thirsty, Shivaji made a coupe and invited all the holy rivers to contribute. Here is Bindusagar Sarovar and near it is the huge temple of Lingraj. For hundreds of years Bhubaneswar has been the main center of Shaivasamdya in the northeast of India. It is said that there were more than seven thousand temples and shrines in the medieval period, of which only five hundred remain.

  • Nice place to visit. I enjoyed with my family. It's a ancient temple, so i had a spiritual experience...

  • Ancient time has a proof that Odisha also have a pure culture in the heart of old town, Bhubaneswar. Old town is a former village that keep related to kings of keshari family. Thanks to them Lingaraj Temple is situated on the top of old town hill. There are four main ways to get connected with temple and one main way to connected with NH5 directly. You can get rushed in Monday & Thursday due to some market activity sound.

  • Historic place. Elders can have a nice day here. Best place for peace
