Udayagiri And Khandagiri Caves - Review

Away from the bustling city, these multi-layered Jain rock caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri showcases the influence of Jainism in the historical period of Orissa. During the reign of Jain King Kharavela, these caves used to be the dwelling retreats for Jain monks. The caves have very low ceiling, barely letting any person to stand erect. The facades of these caves are adorned with auspicious objects related to Jainism that were worshipped during those days. The strange fact about these caves is few of them were naturally created while some were carved by Jain monks.

However, with times most part of this range of caves has turned into ruins. But whatever is left behind, it does depicts the fine architectural work of the ancient India.

Visit these caves before it existence becomes a mere history.

Udayagiri And Khandagiri Caves, Bhubaneshwar Reviews

  • I didn't have much time to enjoy this place, but I think it is a pretty good one. Not so high, but have to use about 50 stairs I think. Yea, obviously u have to at least this. And most importantly good for visiting this place in winter, but if you have to go in any other season, then I think it would be wise to go early in the morning (before 11) or after 4pm

  • Not a large area of coverage. The architecture was amazingly skillful to turn that mass of stone into a luxurious king's palace. I saw queens bathing area in top, from where we can see the city

  • Situated on a small hill, top of the city. Small caves have been crafted inside rocks of the hill. Good place to visit and To go for picnic. Along with Khandagiri caves this place is worth of 3-4/house spending.

  • Stunning caves made out of rock, dating back to the Buddha era. One of the most fascinating places to visit in Odisha. Opt for OTDC conducted tours for visiting this lovely place, but try to visit in the winter season, as the summers are scorching hot here. Happy travelling. 👍

  • Situated on the top, the caves depict the beautiful long lost era of the Jains. They will take you back in time and the place feels very Serene and calm. Beautiful view of the city from top. It's a bit tiring climbing up the hill, so proper footwear is important. Lovely place with ancient caves. well worth a visit as very close to the city of Bhubaneshwar. Use a travel guide book to derive maximum benefit..😀
