Kutch Museum - Review

If you are keen to know about the rich history of Gujarat, visit this marvelous Kutch museum, the oldest museum of the state. Replete with largest collection of extinct Kshatrapa inscription, the museum informs you a lot of stories of the year 1877 during the reign of MaharaoKhengarji III.

Previously, the museum was known as Fergusson Museum. Today, the museum houses exclusive collection of ancient coins (‘Kori’ – Kutch’s ancient local currency), artefacts and folk arts belonging to tribal culture and various ancient paintings, musical instruments, sculptures and metal works. A tour to this museum will educate you a lot about tribal traditions and their lifestyle.

Other than its collection, the Gothic architectural style of the museum is also responsible for its popularity among the visitors.

Don’t miss out the skilled craftswork done on the ornamented doors of the museum.

  • I wasn’t able to go inside the museum building because of afternoon closure, but the building, originally built by a British man to serve as a school, is in great condition on the outside. The museum grounds have a few ancient sculptures as well as some old cannons/guns that were either used in battle or then were created for display purposes. The details on the carvings/status displayed are noteworthy. Some of the tablets even have inscriptions in Hebrew.

  • Nice Place to go. Here there they have shown different Tribes of Kutch, From where did they come and what do they do.
