How to Reach Big Sur


  • By Air : If you are planning to reach Big Sur by air, the closest airport is Monterey Airport. Places like Denver, Colorado, Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix has flights connecting to Monterey Airport. From the airport, you can hire a car to reach Big Sur.
  • By Car : Big Sur is located in the remote coastal region of California. So, the easiest way to access this place is via Highway 1. If you are coming from San Francisco to Big Sur by car, take US -101 south that merges with the Highway. From Los Angeles, take US-101 north.
  • By Bus : Monterey-Salinas Transit route 22 bus is available to reach Big Sur by bus. It travels from downtown Monterey to Nepenthe in Big Sur. It runs every day from last week of May to first week of September and on weekends for the rest of the months. During winter, the bus sometime gets cancelled.
  • By Train : Amtrack Coast Starlight trains are there. It runs from the east of Big Sur to the Santa Lucia mountains. 


To move around the city, public transportation i.e. the buses are the best thing you can think of. Seasonal buses from Monterey to the northern part of Big Sur are there. Otherwise, you can hire a car as well.
