Just behind the entrance gate of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, there is a rugged lane that leads to this rocky cove named Partington Cove. Moving further to the lane, it gets split into two trails. One trail leads to the beach. The strange part of this beach is it doesn’t have any sand; rather it is covered with smooth round rocks. The other trail leads to a 60 foot long tunnel, leading to another small cove. People looking for some kind of water activities can try scuba diving in the Partington cove. However, special permission and guidance of an expert is highly recommendable. Other than this, you can explore the beach or go for hiking on the trail that lies above the cove.

Partington Cove Reviews & Ratings

  • Awesome place to stop and check out. The walk down wasn't bad but coming back up it got a little warm. It was a nice sunny day so that was expected. Once you get down to the bottom there is a great view and if your a little more adventurous you can go down the rocks and see some cool muscles and sea plants. I would highly recommend stoping and spending a little time here. Don't let the hill scare you off. It's really not that bad.

  • We enjoyed this hike tremendously! We spent some time at each Partington Point and Cove. No one ever came to the Point. It was neat to have it all to ourselves! I don’t think this is a well know spot but the trails are very defined. The views are breathtaking and the old tunnel added to the experience.

  • Really awesome place. Make sure to take the bridge and go through the tunnel. It isn't super well marked.

  • Worth the visit. A beautiful place with a steep and challenging trail down to the ocean. Parking along highway 1 is tricky.

  • Short hike to the Cove. The coastline is so beautiful! The water is amazing. If you keep going past where most people stop to enjoy the scenery, you'll get even a better view. And your reward is solitude! Keep going around the rocks, find a spot and hopefully it is sunny enough to enjoy the rays.

  • Back in the late 60's I used to camp in the tunnel at Partington Cove, back then there was a chain linked fence blocking the entrance to it, when did this all change ?

    • I am not sure, but it must have changed before a decade or so as people are hiking to the cove since at least 5 years.
