Clean, pristine water glittering with sunlight will dazzle you as soft, dark sand cushions your feet. The Playa de Azkorri is a small stunning beach in Bilbao, famous for its clean environment and mighty waves. Whether you want to bask in the sun, test out your surf board or study the unique natural environment, you’ll fall in love with this secluded spot.

The area around the 844 metre beach is filled with rocky landscape and sand dunes. The rocky cliffs that surround it provide a space to hike up and down, as well as some truly stunning views. A unique feature about this beach is its unusual sands, instead of golden grains, you’ll find dark that the sand upon the shore is a distinct dark colour of volcanic origin, with green grass growing upon it. The waters have been awarded a blue flag by the European Union commending its cleanliness and though sometimes very rough, the sea attracts water sports enthusiasts from far and wide.

Unlike a beach in the city, the Playa de Azkorri is far away from the buzz of bars and shacks. Though there are basic amenities in the area, it is mostly a natural space with very little sign of human interference. Though it’s easily accessible from Bilbao, it is regarded as isolated as not many venture out here. If you’re sporty and up for a challenge, you can travel up one of the surrounding mountains and be rewarded by lovely views of the sky, the beach and the sun merging together. You can grab a drink at the sole bar on the beach and walk on for miles, lost in thought. Since this is a nudist-friendly beach, you can spend some time evening your skin tone in peace. You can set up a nice sea-side picnic after a cooling swim or a vigorous tussle with the waves. Whatever it is, the beach, with its dark sand and crystal waters, will be a lovely get away from the rest of the world.
