George E. Ohr called himself the "Mad Potter of Biloxi". The five-building museum is dedicated to pottery and creamics. Not only does the museum promote ceramic education, the campus itself had won awards for it’s unique and self-sufficient architecture. The main exhibits showcase the works of George but there’s other stuff to catch too, such as:

  • The Native Guard: A Photographic History of Ship Island’s African American Regiment.
  • My House:  The Pleasant Reed Story – The story of an African American slave who built his own house.
  • The Gallery of African American Art.
  • The Mississippi Sound Welcome Centre.

Fun fact: When Katrina struck, an entire casino barge was washed onto the half-built museum’s property.

Also famous on the museum campus is the ancient oak tree.

Ohr-O'keefe Museum Reviews & Ratings

  • I ventured out here just hoping to see some different art. They ended up having some really interesting artist spotlights, and some very helpful staff. The cafe inside the main building has some nice treats. The architecture of the museum is fantastic. The gift shop spotlights local artists and has some really genuinely great work for sale. I stopped by just hoping to enjoy some art, but ended up chatting with staff and having a great time!

  • I found the two visiting art exhibits to be in appropriately political and offensive. It doesn't take strength to be proactive and politically correct. There is no courage in their message. Art should be open and inclusive - and beautiful. These exhibits were not, on any front. Would the Ohr-O'Keefe present my art with a philosophy which opposed these messages? I bet not. I will not be back.

  • There's not much art inside. I would just walk around the buildings and take some snapshots.

  • Great experience. You won't view pottery like this anywhere else. Each piece is a unique treasure. Was surprised at how many different mediums of art were displayed in several unusually shaped separate buildings . Enjoyed shopping in the gift shop. Found restored old house to be very interesting. Highly recommend that you check out this museum.

  • Amazing plan on going back for date night!
