The name is derived from Herman Blasdell, the first station master of the Erie and Pennsylvania railroad depot. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Blasdell is in the northern part of the town of Hamburg and is bordered to the north by the city of Lackawanna, directly south of Buffalo. The village calls itself the "Gateway to the Southtowns" of Erie County.
