French explorer Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons arrived at Sainte-Croix Island in the year 1604 to establish the first permanent French settlement in North America. They constructed houses and service buildings, gardens, and a chapel there but due to the harsh winter approximately half of the settlers lost their lives. The settlement was thereby moved but the buildings constructed there remained which now narrate the significance of the settlement. They also offer a Junior Ranger Program as well as a National Park Passport stamp which you can't get anywhere else. There are various statues, information plaques, and a pavilion with a view of St. Croix Island. If you are interested in knowing about the First French Settlement in North America, this is where you would want to be.
