About Basilica Di San Petronio, Bologna

This gigantic church is the 6th largest in Europe, which started its construction in 1390 only to be officially blessed in 1954. Dedicated to Petronio, city’s patron saint and bishop back in 5th century. Had things would have gone as planned the Basilica would have been the largest in the world, however the pope did not like the idea of a church larger than St. Peters.

This magnificent basilica is showcases work of some great architects like: Jacopo della Quercia, il Vignola, Baldassarre Peruzzi, il Palladio and Giacomo Rainaldi. You will not only see the beautiful design but the scientific calculation kept in mind building the bascilica. The facade was designed using cosmological diagramming the lower section has 3 unfinished doorways, but of such precision that Michelangelo have studied and replicated them. The upper section made in bricks is visibly incomplete.

While the treasure lies in one of the highest vaults of the Basilica, the play of light on the stained glasses and plaster come together to give us the beautiful interiors. Inside the church is a sundial, used to make the deviation of Julian calendar leading to the discovery of leap year!

As all other churches, Basilica di San Petronio houses some of the brilliant piece of art most of which have a religious theme.

  • Was enjoying the visit with rich historical and architectural significance, until I was told by an old hag who works there to remove my hat. I have no qualms of removing the hat out of courtesy and respect of the sanctuary, but I have a problem being singled out while the rest of tourists still allowed to wear their hats without restrictions. Seems like people from certain ethnic origin being singled out for damnation, while others for salvation. Kudos to Lord of Discrimination.

  • This is one of the most famous place in Bologna just in front of Piazza Maggiore. The Basilica is very big but inside I don't like it. I don't like the policy inside it's really bad system... try it... inside you can adopt a stone and you must pay a ticket for taking pics... very bad system!!!! I recommend it.

  • Excellent monument of medieval culture and architecture. You are going to find wonderful frescoes of XIV - XV centuries inside. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light.

  • Amazing architecture. Be sure to dress properly (no shorts or sleveless shirts) or you will have to buy cover up at the entrance. Apparently there is a fee for taking pictures but we openly took quite few pictures with smartphone without anyone warning us.

  • Very unique church, we were here early in the morning. Everything was still very quiet and serene.
