Wrapped away in via calvature is the church of Santa Maria della Vita housing bologna’s most exquisite work of art. Known for Baroque architecture and the terracotta sculptures, the church will leave you amazed.
Founded in 13th century by Battuti of S. Maria della Vita the church is a part of a sanctuary with a portico at the entrance and elegant and breezy interiors which takes you to another world altogether. The site houses sultptures like the Compianto sul Cristo Morto by Niccolò dell’Arca, the Transito della Vergine by Alfonso Lombardi, and the Museum of Health, situated in the old Santa Maria Della Vita hospital.
The sculptures here are extremely expressive and will leave you baffled! The passion and skill put into making them is clearly shown, one can truly say that the entire beauty of this plays lies in the splendid work of clay that is on display. Lovely church just off the main city square. Interesting exhibit. In a country full of beautiful churches this one was a pleasant experience.
For 2 euro you can see some wonderful terracotta statues. The church itself is ok, nothing particularly great about it otherwise.
One of the most interesting places to visit in Bologna. The church is not very large, but the most interesting here is the composition of terracotta figures representing the overthrow of Christ from the cross. There is also a very interesting museum for the construction of the Neptune fountain. A separate entrance fee is required for the museum and terracotta figures.
It was cool and all but not a “must see”. Definitely take a stop by if you have time though!
One of the prettiest buildings I have seen in Bologna! A must visit.
