The Crystal Grottoes was discovered in the year 1920 and is the only show cave in the United States of Maryland. The caverns though discovered in 1920 were opened to public in the year 1922. This natural phenomenon has more formations per square foot than any other cave known to mankind. It is also regarded as the most naturally kept cave in the world. To explore the cave, you would be guided by tour guides who would answer your technical, educational, historical and geological questions. Also, it’s worth knowing that the caves are 54 degrees all year round, therefore it's cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. Be prepared to be mesmerized while you are there.

Crystal Grottoes Caverns Reviews & Ratings

  • So glad we happened upon this treasure! The trip through the caverns takes about 30 minutes, and the tour guide gives great information about the history of the caverns and the formations inside. We felt that it was enjoyable and well worth our time.

  • I wasn't sure what to expect when I went here. What I experienced was a tour of a cave with a tremendous number of formations accompanied by a surprisingly informative and detailed explanation of the cavern's human and geological origins and history, including the types of formations and how they were created. It didn't have the gigantic formations of a better known cavern like Luray, but it more than made up for this with the variety of formations and your ability to get close enough to really see their detail. I preferred the more detailed description of the formations and geology provided here. I like the more commercial caverns like Luray. Both types of places have their attractions. If forced to choose, however, I think I would choose this one because of its focus on the cavern itself and it's geology over descriptions of features that seemed aimed at attracting tourists.

  • Absolutely awesome! Great staff. Staff gave a very good recommendation for a place to eat lunch.

  • A great thing to do on a super hot day! It is a little overpriced but interesting guided tour. Not much at all to the gift shop, just 2 cases of a few fossils and mineral stones. Very pleasant friendly staff. A family owned and run business since the 1920s.

  • The admittance fee is pretty steep, but as a one time visiting, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was a very family friendly tour. The tour was 30 minutes which I wish were a little longer so we could explore a bit more. The caves are very impressive and there are lots of formations.
