While hiking along the mountainous countryside of the Borgund Village, the Borgund Stave Church will seem like a gateway to heaven. This Sogn type stave church with triple naves is now a living museum featuring the exquisite architecture and interior décor. It was built in between 1180-1250 A.D. The ground sills connect the four corner posts on the stone foundation while the vertical wooden boards form the walls. The church has a basilica styled construction with 14th century chancel, apse and reduced side aisles along with an ambulatory around the exterior to the church building. The Borgund Stave Church is often dubbed as the “Cube within a Cube” with the arcade formed by buttresses and the St Andrew’s Crosses formed by the columns.
