The Mapparium is located in Boston, United States and is also known as the Glass Room or the Globe Room. This beautiful globe is placed in Mary Baker Eddy Library as an exhibit and is one of the principal attractions in the city. This world-famous stained-glass globe was built in the year 1935 and is considered the world’s largest walk-in globe. The Mapparium is three-story tall and the maps shown on its stained glasses can be best viewed from a 30 feet long bridge located inside the globe. The political maps that are shown on the globe are based on the ones published in 1934 by Rand McNally. The Mapparium is the brainchild of the architect Chester Lindsay Churchill.

Some interesting things about the Mapparium Boston -

  • Churchill was inspired by the globe located in the lobby of the building of the newspaper called New York Daily News.
  • In the beginning, Mapparium was illuminated with the help of hundreds of lamps that are now replaced with LED lights.
  • The Mapparium in Boston is the only place in the world where one can see the maps of different countries on a globe without any manipulation. This is because one can see the globe from the center and the eye-distance to the map of each country is similar.
  • Since the political scenario has witnessed a change, the Church considered to modify the maps on the globe, but the idea got rejected each time as the Mapparium is more regarded as a historical artifact. Therefore, the political boundaries seen on the globe are out of date.
  • Since the Mapparium is very huge and has a concave shape, you can see a lot of it at a glance. This makes it easier to find out how far is Asia from America and other interesting things.
  • It is also important to note that the spherical interior of the globe creates a unique acoustic effect. Since the rounded glass walls reflect the sound, you can hear your voice echoing inside the globe. Therefore, the Mapparium is also known as “the whispering gallery”.
