The Gallatin History Museum is located in the building that once served as the Gallatin Country Jail. The structure was built in 1911 and is mentioned on the list of National Historic places. The museum here is maintained by the Gallatin Historical Society. You will not find typical museum-like exhibits here. The jail cells and gallows are the most important exhibits here. Most of the objects in the collections belong to prominent residents of Montana State. There are exhibits dedicated to the Native American history and the local history of the Gallatin Valley. Bozeman’s first steam-powered fire engine is currently put up on display here. Do check out the pioneer log cabin next to the engine. Also notable is the replica of Fort Ellis. The museum owns 25000 digitized photographs that provide witness to the history captured. A research library is also present in the premises.

Gallatin History Museum Reviews & Ratings

  • Awesome tour guide! Very knowledgeable of the history of Gallatin county and the history of the building the museum is housed in. Amazing artifacts on display! Absolutely intriguing to see the actual jail cells, gallows, and read of the criminal justice activities in the newspapers just as everyone read them over a century ago. Well worth the time and entrance fee, especially since allowed to wander at leisure after the tour. Antique items galore on display!

  • A great place to learn about some local history of the town. They have some interactive items that the kids seem to enjoy especially the jail cell. The staff is very helpful & it's bigger than you would think looking at it from the outside.

  • An interesting small local museum in the old county jail. Not expensive to visit and easy parking out front. Lots of jail history exhibits but also lots of pioneer history. A few things kids can touch so great for families. Run by volunteers and self supported. Great bookstore with lots of local history as well as western, cowboy and Yellowstone. They also have Montana cookbooks.

  • Nice, friendly, and helpful staff. Fun exhibits with interesting local stories.

  • Fairly small, maybe take an hours visit. Some interesting history of the area
