At the gateway of Bregenz’s old town you come across a rather startling sight – a grotesque mummified shark. Ask the locals to tell you why, though generally, it’s there to ward off evil. Through it, you’ll step into winding streets, colorful houses and many gardens. The walls you see here have been around since the 13th century. The main highlights are:

• The half-timbered Old Town Hall.
• The Martinsturm.
• The prisoner’s home, which is the largest building in town.
• the Deuringschlösschen – 1698 palace.
• the 1636 Capuchin Monastery and Church.
• The 14th century Parish Church of St. Gallus that was remodeled in 1738 with rich Baroque and Rococo decor.

• You’ll have to walk.
• Ask the locals for directions.
