Brest a city with a natural harbor has been a naval base for the French for centuries now. Located in North-western France, Brest is replete with tourist attractions that invite vacationers from all over Europe. Though the city has to be built again after the second world war as it faced a lot of damage at the time and almost everything that the city has was demolished. Today, the city has risen like a Phoenix and there are plenty of places to visit in Brest focussing on a discovery, conquest, and adventure. In Ocean research, it is a leading city in the world. 1. Conservatoire Botanique du Vallon du Stang-Alar

This conservatory helps in protecting the gardens and also the endangered species. If you want to visit here, you have to do that between the month of July and August as that is the time when two greenhouses situated there open for general public. The recreate a lot of things which you cannot find anywhere else like feature plants, the subtropical and dry tropical oceanic climates, tropical mountains, and the rainforests. You will found there nesocodon, a flowering plant which can be only seen in Mauritius.

2. Port of Brest

As we said earlier that Port was always a military port, so you will find one of the best ports for the maritime activities here. You can get a look of the shipyards at the Quai Commandant Malbert. The Rade de Brest’s natural harbor is another treat to the eyes. Abeille-Flandre, one of the most powerful navy tugboats can be seen here at the harbor too.

3. Oceanopolis

More than 60 percent of the ocean research that happens in Europe is done at the harbor of Brest. So, certainly, Oceanopolis is one of the most attractive place for tourists here. There are 50 aquarium tanks of different sizes. The biggest one is for the sharks and can hold a million liters of water. There are three pavilions here after the upgradation in the year 2000. The government tried to recapture the mould of the city as it was before the Second World War damage.

5. Musee National de la Marine

The oldest building in the whole city of Brest is the Naval Museum. This building is here since the 3rd century. Later it was used as the seats for the Dukes of Brittany. Here you will find a lot of ancient things like old paintings showing the development of the ports here, historic sculptures, old models of ships, warships, etc. You can also witness the Seehund midget submarine and the Second World War destroyer’s command panels.

6. Pont de L’Iroise

This is a bridge over the Le Cap and the Pointe Sainte Barbe over the river Elton. This bridge was constructed in the year 1994. This the fourth largest bridge of its kind in whole France. The bridge made a world record as there is a total of 400 meter distance between its two pylons which are 113 meter high. If you are a tourist and are in Brest, don’t forget to take a picture with the bridge. There is another bridge near that, the plougastel bridge but you can’t visit there with vehicles but can certainly go there on foot as the bridge is restricted for vehicles.

7. Cours Dajot

Behind the port, there is a 500 meter high esplanade, Cours Dajot from which the whole view of the harbor is seen and a large part of the city is seen too. It was designed by a military engineer named Louis-Lazare Dajot. Beside the lanes, you will see knee high hedges, and lawns along with the lining of elm trees. The park was completed in the year 1769. A big festival is also held year every four years and you can witness it if you visit Brest in 2020. When the Americans arrived here after the First World War in the year 1917 they were welcomed by the people of Brest. To thank the gesture, they build Tour Rose here, which is another thing to look out for in the place.

8. Musee des Beaux Arts

This is the best Art museum of Brest but it faced a lot of difficulties to recollect the art after all got destroyed in the war. They have now a great deal of modern art and more than 250 paintings and sculptures from 17th and the 19th centuries. If you have visited there don’t miss the works of Pierre Bonnard. There is a large Italian collection of Carlo Dolci, Palma il Giovane, and Carlo Saraceni.

9. Port de Recouvrance

The bridge is made over the Penfeld river and holds the record of being the highest vertical lift in the whole world. The bridge was made in 1954. Earlier there was a swing bridge in the same place which the Pont de Recouvrance replaced. The previous bridged was destroyed by the bombing in war in the year 1944.

10. Walks

If you are in a holiday in Brest, there is always a scope for a walk as there are a lot of things like hidden beaches and war bunkers very close to each other. So, walking here is a great option and the climate is very good here to you will not be exhausted too early. You will find here the Vallee du Costour which was a factory of arms once but now has transformed in a woodland filled with herons and deer. There you will find a lighthouse along with a small sandy cove. The lighthouse is still running and gives signals to the surfers. 12. Boat Trips

15. Fort de Beretheaume
