The South Holston Dam on the lake of the same name derived its name from Steven Holston River, which again was the name of a Tennessee settler. Operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the South Holston Dam was built during 1940’s across the South Fork Holston River. The dam spans 530 yards to give birth to the lake and thereby generate hydropower and control flood. Below the dam, you will find a footbridge leading to the Osceola Island and also the 1-mile loop trail. This hydroelectric dam in Sullivan County is surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest and offers a great view from above.
