The bells of this beautiful and old cathedral chime at 11, not 12, perhaps the only church to do in the world. The legend goes that during the 30 years war, the Swedish invaders promised to let up their siege of the city if they failed to capture it by noon – so some cunning citizen chimed the bell an hour early on the 15th of August, successfully fooling the aggressors into withdrawing. Amusing anecdotes aside, the cathedral is one of the most important pieces of architecture in the country. Its interiors are Baroque, but the slender 84 metre tall towers are the best viewpoint in the whole city are Gothic Revival. This lovely sight that looks over Brno is made even more prominent thanks to the Church’s position on top of a hill. It’s hard to miss if you want to visit – the place pretty much dominates the skyline.
