This square is where Brno comes in to meet. What kind of fun you have here really depends on the season, and the best of them all is Christmas, when the season’s markets light up the place with an irreplaceable magic. It’s made entirely for pedestrians and that’s a good thing; the many shops, bars, restaurants and boutiques around the place are just begging to be checked out. Another reason this place is popular with the tourists is that it’s within walking distance of most of Brno’s major attractions. It’s the heart of the city – that means a lot of people watching, always an excellent if lazy pastime. In the northwest Corner of the square, you’ll find a monument to the victims of the plague. The square is also surrounded by a number of architecturally significant buildings – these include the House of Lords of Lipá, Klein´s Palace, Plague Pillar, Kounitz Palace and the House of Four Giants. The House of Four Giants is especially arresting; the four statues that are its namesake caused much controversy when first unveiled in the 1920s – it displays four naked men at work holding up the balcony above them.
