This Town Hall, built in the 13th century, holds a greater sway on the imagination of Brno’s citizens than one would expect. A number of myths and tales surround it that the townspeople are only too glad to romanticise over – and the evidence of these legends can be seen with your own eyes. For example, consider the wheel in the town hall passage; Jiri Burk the wheelmaker put it there as the result of a silly bet challenging him to cut down a tree, make a wheel and have it hung up at the hall – all within 12 hours. He won the bet. See the crooked turret at the top? AntonínPilgram, master craftsman, built it that way as the town councilors who’d promised him a handsome reward for that work failed to pay him. Lastly, see the Brno Dragon? Get a local to tell you this one – and be accommodating of the fact that the hanging dragon looks an awful lot like a crocodile. For most of it’s history this was the only place in Brno where anything of significance happened – court, council, city permissions and so on and so forth.. The Town Hall is also popular for it’s magnificent viewpoint. Its architecture has Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic influences.
