Castle, fortress, prison – this building has played many roles for Brno for much of Brno’s history. Built in Baroque style, it was completed by King Ottokar of Bohemia. The townspeople took it over in 1560, and fortified it to great effect – it was a major defence against the Swedes in the 30 Years War. It’s use as a prison also gained prominence – becoming the holding and executing point for many idealists, revolutionaries, political and controversial figures over the years. The Germans even transformed the place based on 3rd Reich ideals into a barracks. For all these reasons, once upon a time, this was one of the most notorious and feared places in all of Europe.

Less than a year after the Castle ceased operations as a place of military power in 1959, it began to serve as the seat of the Brno City Museum instead – a role it plays to this day. The Grounds around the place are a popular place for a walk among the locals and it’s not unusual to see young couples or dog walkers about. It also hosts a number of major cultural functions through out the year.

  • Great place to visit in Brno. Awesome views from the castle, and a really nice walk through the park too. It is well preserved and There are a couple of cafes at the top to have a coffee or more. We were there at sunset and the views we simply stunning.

  • An imposing and fascinating piece of history, set in the midst of a huge park that takes up the entire hill on which the castle is set. The Spielberk is one of the highlights of the city of Brno and as such, the museum fully deserves be a bit modernised as it does feel a bit antiquated. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our visit greatly.

  • Nice and traditional. Recommend to visit. Nice walk instead city center. Hilly but noting serious..

  • Nice place for a walk up the hill. The castle looks well-maintained and also the surroundings are very nice. There are also some places at the top to have a snack or drink. Only the views around are not that spectacular which is kind of a general property of all places in Brno.

  • Pretty good trip around a chek castle. Great views and some interesting exhibits.
