This austere looking church doesn’t look at first glance like anything special. It was built in the 15th century. But when you get close to the building, on the south side of the clock tower to the west of the building, that’s when you see a small stone figure that the locals know as the Shameless: it’s a man baring his buttocks at the cathedral. Though no one is sure why this feature exists, it’s been suggested as a parting insult from a mason to his rivals.
That’s not all of St. James’s curiosities though. In 2001, quite by accident, Brno stumbled across an ossuary beneath the Church that had been forgotten to time. The bones of about 50000 citizens were discovered. It’s now been restored and is opn to visitors as the second largest ossuary in Europe. The entrance to the ossuary is from the main square outside St. James’s Church. They’ve decided to greet visitors to chamber music here, giving the place an atmosphere that veers between sombre and what you might expect in a horror movie.
