The ossuary under the St. James church isn’t the only mysterious doorway into Brno’s past – there is virtually a labyrinth running under Brno, a system of underground cellars and corridors under the city’s historical centre. The original purpose of these was to store consumables, to process alcohol and beer storage, but that use expanded to include jail cells and an alchemist’s workshop. If you’re there with a guide, he’ll even lock you into the lunatic cell at request. They also made excellent hidey-holes during war. The cells date back to the baroque era, but it wasn’t until 2009 that they were all connected together and then made open to the public. Most of these spread out under Brno’s oldest square – the vegetable market.
