Clingmans Dome, Bryson City Reviews
This location is the highest peak of the smokey mountains at 6643 feet. Once you drive to this location, it is a half mile hike up to the observation deck. The hike is extremely steep. The average person takes 30 minutes to complete it. The signs say no strollers, wheel chairs or motorized scooters allowed. The path is paved and wide enough for any of those devices to be used though. Scooters probably don't have enough power to make the incline. I would suggest taking bottled water with you as there are no vending machines or drinking fountains available. The observation deck is a 360 degree aerial view of the range. You are literally up in the clouds. The temperature is about 15 degrees lower and get a misting from the clouds. If it is a foggy day, it will limit your visibility immensely
Clingmans Dome is a moderate hike on a paved concrete trail. It took our group about 30 minutes to get up. The overlook is beautiful with a nice cool breeze, and you'll see stunning views of the entire Great Smoky Mountain range! We went in October and it was very crowded with tourists, so this is either a hugely popular attraction or else it was just the season. We had to wait a while to get a parking spot. But, in the end, it was worth it. Nice that we could take our stroller along.
Beware it is a long uphill walk. My kids and I actually hike often back home in PA so 6-7 miles is a walk in the park... this is under a mile, uphill and the air gets thin. Not what we are used to. But, getting to the top it was the most amazing view and worth all the effort. Do it if you are able! You will not be disappointed.
One of the highest point in the smokies located 6,643 feet. The most scenic picture of smokies can be captured from this point. One mile of walking on the paved mountain is the wonderful experience. Reaching the top on one stretch gave me a really wonderful experience. You can find bears even in this park of smokies but not so commonly found.
It is a challenge to get to the dome. It is up a fairly steep grade that is a half mile hike. The trail is blacktop the whole way to the dome. There are places to sit and rest along the way. The views are beautiful from the top of the dome. It was very foggy the day we were there but it was still beautiful. There is a small visitors center at the trailhead. The drive to Clingmans Done is awesome.
