The square is named for the 1989 event in which the rule of the Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was finally overthrown. It was a historic event in which over 100,000 people gathered in one place to boo and jeer at him. The square itself isn't as remarkable as the buildings that surround it.  There is an ugly monument in the center which of the locals call 'the olive on a cocktail stick', otherwise known as the Monument of Rebirth. Another nearby monument is the Wall of Remembrance on which are inscribed the names of all those who died in the revolution.  Some of the notable buildings on the location are:

  • The former Royal Palace- Now the National Art Museum
  • The Cretulescu Church
  • The Athenee Palace Hilton hotel
  • The National Library
  • The Romanian Athenaeum- A popular and respected Concert Hall
  • The Paucescu House
  • Statue of Corneliu Coposu
