About Citadella, Budapest
Citadella in Budapest is basically a fortress on top of the Gellert Hill. Citadella is the hungarian term for the word Citadel which actually means a kind of a fortress. It does not only hold a very important scenic value, but also a very important place in the military history of Budapest. Lot of wars have been fought with the support of this fortress. The need to build this fortress was felt in the year 1851 post the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It also has an amazing collection of Red Weaponry by it that you should definitely have a look at. Citadella is also a representation of the Austrian-Hungarian compromise. After being built by forced labourers, it was home to various Austrian soldiers. After the need for recognizing the association between the two countries subsided, the city took control of the Citadella and today it is a part of their heritage. About 220 meters in diameter, it almost covers the entire 235 meters of the plateau. The panoramic view of the Citadella is as breathtaking as is the view of Budapest from here.

Citadella, Budapest Reviews - Write a Review
Fantastic viewpoint over Budapest, excellent for panoramic pictures. Easy to reach on foot, as long as you don't mind walking quite a few steps. Toilet facilities available at the top but a fee of 300 FLT or 1 euro applies.
Beautiful place especially during the night, when all the lights are turned on in the city and. From here you can see the Castle, the Pairlament, the Budapest Eye, the Danube and couple of the bridges across it at the same time. One of the best spots to see the most of the city from above.
A must place to visit to see a panoramic extravaganza of vistas encircling Budapest. The Citadella sits high above the city overlooking all the major tourist attractions. It is possible to walk to the top but the steps are steep. Alternatively take the hop on bus but you need more than the 15 minute short stop to take advantage of the views.
Highly recommend to anyone. Me and my wife made some unforgettable memories here. Very beautiful. Looking forward to coming back.
This hill, which once had a Hapsburg palace, provides an incredible view of Budapest. After enjoying the view we turned our attention to the hill. If you look carefully some of the buildings still have bullet pock marks from WW2. Unfortunately the communists tore down the former Hapsburg palace in 1968 rather than restoring it. The reason was simply because the palace represented an elite ruling class who dominated and exploited the workers. Our guide said there was an archaeological dig at the palace site in the 1990s but the government ran out of money for this project before completing the fieldwork, artifact analyses, and report.
