The Freedom Bridge or the Liberty Bridge in Budapest is a beautiful bridge that sits across the river Danube connecting the Buda region of the city with the pest region. This stunning green bridge is an important part of the history of Hungary. It is decorated with beautifully with statues of a falconlike bird called Turul which has tremendous symbolism in Greek myth.
It was originally named after the emperor Franz Joseph but has acquired its current moniker more recently. During World War 2 the bridge was destroyed by the Germans and needed to be reconstructed.
Today it is an important landmark that leads up to the famous and affluent Gellert Hill. The traffic here is quite busy so don’t expect a quiet walk. Nevertheless, the bridge is a wonderful area for a walk across providing amazing views of the blue Danube as well as the area around it.
- The Gellert Hill is situated quite close to the Liberty Bridge in case you want to combine visits.
- There are plans of turning the bridge into a pedestrian bridge soon which is certainly good news for the tourists.
