One of the famous historical attractions in Bukittinggi, Lobang Jepang or the Japanese Tunnel is basically an underground military complex. The tunnel dates back to the year 1942 when it was constructed by the Japanese as a protection tunnel in order to defend the army. The construction of the tunnel was completed in the year 1944. The Japanese forces were facing pressure from the Allied forces during World War II and to prevent this, they built a number of tunnels in the cities of Bukittinggi, Biak, and Bandung. The tunnel was opened to tourists in 1994.
