Zoo De Castellar - Review

A completely unique and beautiful concept, Zoo de Castellar or the Castellar Zoo is an animal rescue centre. It was started in the year 1998 and was opened in 2002. The main aim of the zoo is to aid animals which were seized by the authorities. The zoo provides a safe haven for animals that were the victims of the black market and who were mistreated and uncared for. The purpose of the rescue centre is to provide these animals with better living conditions. Visitors to the zoo are allowed to feed the animals and interact with them directly. The Zoo de Castellar is situated around an hour’s drive from Cadiz.

  • Great zoo. Not massive but the kids liked it and you get to actually interact with some of the animals, great value for money. The animals are all saved or adopted from closed down circuses etc.. worth buying the animal feed at the entrance. You get to go into a massive enclosure full of birds that will last for on you and you can chill with them.

  • Children loved getting close to and touching the animals but not sure how morally right it is or how safe it is. Enclosures were small with very little enrichment for the animals, very few staff around to ensure animals treated well, I saw a grown women flick a parrot in the face because it tried to bite her because she wanted a photo before giving it the food she was holding. children loved it and got some lovely photos, hoping the money from the public goes to a good cause.

  • I'm not normally a fan of zoo's as I don't like animals being kept in captivity and very often the establishments appear to put profit ahead of animal welfare. This is not like that with a story based on animals being rescued from smugglers and staff who really seem to care. That said some of the enclosures could really do with a clean and some of the animals showed signs of distress. I appreciate much of this could be down to financial constraints as I assume the zoo is at its busiest during the tourist season Note to Google, maps tends to take you the wrong direction up a dirt track and alongside a canal. If you are also heading this way turnaround.

  • One of the best zoos I have been, ever. Staff friendly and outgoing, you can touch and hold soo many animals. That is macaques, lemurs, snakes, sparrows, parrots, goats... Too many to list. Highly recommend anyone to visit.

  • Unique place on Costa del Sol to see some rare animals and even get to hold some of them on your hands. Kids just loved it!
