Located in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, the Cagayan de Oro is a regional center and business hub of Northern Mindanao. Being a highly urbanized city, there are a plethora of places to visit in Cagayan de Oro. The annual festivals like Fiesta, Higalaay are some major Cagayan de Oro points of interest. Some world renowned dishes like pastel bread, Chicharron, hamon da cagayan and street foods like kwek-kwek, fish balls and tempura are amongst the significant attractions in Cagayan de Oro. The city is home to a large number of museums and visiting them should mandatorily be on your list of things to do in Cagayan de Oro.
Cagayan de Oro dons a charm aggregated from the cultures and cuisines from all over the world. This makes it a mixed cultural hub and the lifestyle gives evidences of that. The Cagayan de Oro is a part of the rapidly developing metropolitan area including other cities like El Salvador, Opol and Gitagum.
1. Abide with nature at the Mapawa Nature Park
You can walk the rope bridge, hold snakes, swim in hollows, do waterfall jumping and every other adventurous activity at this nature park. Roam around the park in their famous zip line or explore the park by horse back riding. The multiple falls and lush greenery manage to create a peaceful atmosphere amidst the adventure vibes. The canyoneering and 20 meter drop in waters are some of the most exciting rides in this park. Public transport is not available, but you can take a taxi or your own car and easily reach the park.
2. An evening at Golden Friendship Plaza
It was initially built as a city divider and is a prime spot for shopping. The prime location of Golden Friendship Plaza is the main reason why it tops the list of places to visit in Cagayan de Oro. The plaza is all about food, clothing and entertainment and you can spend a chilled evening here.
3. Garden of Malasag Eco Tourism Village
This beautiful and tranquil place is located at just a few minutes drive away from the city centre. Along with a delicious breakfast you can also get an enchanted view of the city from here. The very rare to get, serene and peaceful vibes is the reason why you should definitely visit this place. The Village even has cabins for staying and they are unbelievably affordable.
4. Gaston Park
Located just next to the Cathedral, the Gaston Park is a perfect place to spend a quaint evening. The fountain in middle of the park is a main attraction amongst all the locals and tourists. There are a lot of florists and souvenir shops around the park which further add to the beauty of this place. You can binge on tasty food at the numerous street falls nearby.
5. Capitol Museum of Three Cultures
Located in the Corrales Extension, the Capitol Museum manifests a blend of three cultures- Lawlanders, Maranao and Lumads in the Maranao life. A visit to this museum is a very informative and educational experience and you get to know a lot about the Christian, Muslim and tribal cultures in the Misamis Oriental. The museum showcases dioramas of Misamis Oriental, weapons, paintings and some contemporary artifacts.
6. Take a stroll at the Opol Beach
You can enjoy a good game of beach Volleyball or do skim boarding at the Opol beach. This is a perfect place to have an early morning walk or take awesome photographs.The Opol beach is just a 15 min ride away from the city and is the closest beach to Cagayan de Oro.
7. Saint augustine Metropolitan Cathedral
This Roman Catholic Cathedral is of a Gothic like Architecture and is located in the Misamis Oriental. The wooden cross at the entrance and beautiful stained glass windows above the main windows in the transcript are some eye catching features of the Cathedral. Located in the Misamis Oriental, the Cathedral is one of the best places to visit in the Cagayan de Oro.
8. Experience serenity at the Eden’s Solace
It is a low-key hilltop spot famous for the sunset view it provides. You can have a peaceful meal along with chilled beer and enjoy the scintillating sunset view ahead of you. Located at the 9000 Misamis Oriental, the Eden’s Solace is not very far from the City of Golden friendship.
9. Shop at the Plaza Divisoria
The Plaza Divisoria is a plaza built between two main roads of the city and is surrounded by many historical monuments, restaurants and shops. It is located on a central location and is near to many landmarks of the city.
Initao is a protected area in Western Misamis Oriental. This park includes some very old limestone forests. It also houses the Lasang Secret Adventure Park and is situated just 27 miles from the Laguindigan Airport and 37 miles west from the Cagayan de Oro. You can spend some time in the vicinity of some century-old trees as well sturdy trees like teak, molave and narra. The park also houses some rare bird species.
11. Macahambus Hill Cave
Located at just 4-5 km from the city airport, this intriguing cave used to be a strategic point of defense during the World war. The planned architecture and location of that cave is pretty evident of this fact. You can overlook a cliff from the other side of the cave and also wander around for a while.
12.Take a half day city tour by the Tsada Kagay
This service provides you with a 4 hour tour of the city in an air conditioned coaster. You can get a glimpse of the historical heritage of the city and experience the refreshening aura. Get a bird’s eye of the city with this tour if you are here for just a day and need to explore the city in a limited amount of time.
13. Have a taste of the Sinuglaw
Sinuglaw is a traditional dish of the Filipinos prepared from raw fish and dressed with chillies and vegetables. It is widely available at many restaurants ranging throughout the city. It tastes best with a fruit dish known as the Tabon Tabon. Your visit to to Cagayan de Oro is incomplete without this experience.
14. Shopping spree at the Limketkai Centre
This shopping complex spread over an area of 40-hectare has numerous local boutique shops, international brands, fast food chains and speciality fine-dining restaurants. You can spend a chilled out day here shopping and eating. It also has several entertainment units like the Atrium which is an activity avenue and has the capacity of over 4500 people.
15. Go jogging at the McArthur park (Vincente de Lara)
This is famous place amongst the locals for jogging and evening strolls. You can spend a quaint morning here amidst the age-old mahogany trees that offer a therapeutic canopy. It also houses the Press Freedom Monument and the Heritage Monument of Misamis Oriental which are worth visiting.
