The church is so named because of its location above a gatehouse of the Babylon fortress. It’s famous for not only its Coptic Architecture, but also for being one of the first examples of the Basilican style. The entrance of the church is worth seeing as it is completely decorated and has an open courtyard, which has twenty nine steps leading towards the church. The church has marble pulpit, icons, murals and even inlaid screens. The most famous site of this church is the Virgin Mary which is definitely worth watching. Built on the two pillars of Babylonian fortress. Loved the architecture, the ambiance, the historical significance, the maintenance standards. Worth visiting place.
The Church is dated back to the 4th century. Built on the ruins of 2 towers from the old Roman fortress of Babylon, one can literally see it hanging from the glass floor! Al-Muallaqa or the hanging church was built by Emperor Trajan in 98 AD who also known for the greatest military expansion in Roman history! The Church has 110 icons dating back to different centuries! It is also built in the basilican style and was designed to mimic the shape of Noah's Ark!! As one enters the church they can see the relics of the martyrs who were persecuted here on the left also one of the other reasons why it's also called the hanging church. Unbelievable how these things have been kept and preserved for decades and how we can learn from them and connect this to our faith. Worth a visit !
Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church also known as The Hanging Church is one of the oldest churches in Egypt and the history of a church on this site dates to the third century. It belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
