The Terrifying One, as the Great Sphinx is known in Egypt, is built of limstone and has the head of a man with the face of a Pharaoh, a hawk or a ram with the body, and tail and legs of a lion. Modern Egyptology holds that the Sphinx was built in 2500BC by Khafra. There has been much controversy over the true age of the Sphinx, circling around the question whether the erosion of its structure is wind or water caused. If the water erosion hypothesis is true, then the Sphinx could be four thousand years older than originally thought.

Sphinx Reviews & Ratings

  • The Egyptian Pyramids are absolutely breathtaking!! the most remarkable monument in the world. An important stop at your tour in Egypt. It is very close to the pyramids.. Can't explain in words.....!.

  • Second magic place after Giza Necropolis. Must see and Must visit in Egypt. Better if you'll have some base information before come there. Authentic atmosphere, lot of new impressions guaranteed. 1-2 days is not enough to learn all that places, better reserve at least one week.

  • Went here earlier this year (March) and had a blast. Egypt is one of those places that is mystical, you see it so much on T.V. and in Movies and except something completely different than when you get there. The Sphinx of Giza was amazing in every way possible except it was much smaller than I had imagined. Its also literally 20 yards from a busy street with hotels and businesses. Either way, totally worth it

  • Although the great sphinx is about 20 meter or 62 feet high from base to the top of the head, from the viewing point, it looks smaller. It would have been nicer if tourists were allowed to go closer for a better grasp of the details. Nonetheless, it is an amazing experience to see it up close. You can take a car or horse carts to reach there as walking in the desert under the sun might be difficult for some.

  • It's wonderful to witness the grandiose of a bygone era and wonder how our ancestors managed to build such huge structures. The management is doing a horrible job and the place is full of tourist traps. But, everything beats the first sight of these marvelous structures
