Callanish Standing Stones - Review

The site is a unique arrangement of standing stones placed in a cruciform pattern. The local folklore says that the Callanish stones were the giants who did not convert to Christianity. However, others have suggested that there stands a relationship between the stones, the moon and the Clisham range. With different interpretations surrounding the site, it becomes worthwhile to go and explore. You will be happy to have spent time here as such stones are rare to find and are really fascinating. Admire the place, click photographs and have coffee at the cafe!

Callanish Standing Stones, Callanish Reviews

  • The stones are incredible and seem to have been laid out in a compass style. The scenery around the stones is also fantastic. A must see whilst on Lewis. The information that is supplied about the stones is fairly brief and maybe more could be done to provide more information to visitors.

  • These ancient megaliths have stood where they are for at least 5000 years, making the seasons for those who built them and linking is with our past. The is a visitor centre with a nice cafe and a display and film about the stones which you need to pay to see. You can if you wish just walk straight past the visitor centre and on up to the stones. Visitors can walk up to the stones and touch them, which is nice, this bit of history still belongs to us the people rather than having been appropriated by the authorities.

  • Beautiful, evocative scenery. The stones are impressive and well worth seeing. The short walk to see the other two nearby sites is relatively easy and very simple to follow.

  • Truly 5 star stone circle, best to go twice, once when visitor centre is open then again in the evening when it's quiet for photos and contemplation. It even tops the Orkney stone circles and that's saying something. The other minor circles are also worth walking to, the whole setting is wonderful.

  • I cannot help thinking that this must be a most tantalising place to visit for anyone who wishes to feel and experience the grandeur of this construction. Many years old and since then these stones have stood up to the elements that Lewis has thrown at it. It is one place you can walk up to the stones themselves and experience the inner circle, or see the length of it. Around you is amazing landscape and wonderful views. If you visit, note there are two other sites just along the way with equal interest but far less visitors. Not to far from here are the Black Houses too. An amazing reconstruction with a perfect bay. This whole area can be explored and enjoy and although you need a tour guide, rental or own car to get you about, it won't be wasted! Oh, and the traditional Tweed Mill nearby - I think it was Carloway Mill - is very much worth a stop in. The friendly folks there were super as we're most of the folks we met on out adventures in Lewis. Enjoy yourself.
