The site is a unique arrangement of standing stones placed in a cruciform pattern. The local folklore says that the Callanish stones were the giants who did not convert to Christianity. However, others have suggested that there stands a relationship between the stones, the moon and the Clisham range. With different interpretations surrounding the site, it becomes worthwhile to go and explore. You will be happy to have spent time here as such stones are rare to find and are really fascinating. Admire the place, click photographs and have coffee at the cafe!

  • Amazing set of standing stones dating back over 4000 years! There is a small visitor centre and cafe next to them. The main car park is just after the single track road on the right (which is unsuitable for buses or large motorhomes). You can go up the single track road but go slow as it's very narrow and steep! Best to go as the sun is going down!

  • One of the most significant ancient monuments in Europe. It comprises a long avenue of standing stones leading to a stone circle with a central chamber in the floor of the circle, and evidence of a cobbled or paved area surrounding the chamber. Erected c. 5,000 years ago, it is impossible to see these ancient stones, most of them several metres tall, and not wonder at their purpose and their significance to the people who lived here and erected them 5 millenia ago. The visitor centre is what you would expect, there's a shop, cafe (good food at decent prices) and more information on the stones themselves. Unmissable.

  • Very touristy. As usual a reasonable looking cafe and visitor centre. The midges however are spectacular (and itchy). What I would recommend is clambering onto the rocks above the stones and looking at the amazing view of the sea loch. Best to visit when either windy or wet (less touristy and less midgy).

  • Nice standing stone circle. Good little info room and cafe. Very busy during the day which killed the atmosphere a bit. Came back at sunset to take some photos. Well worth an early doors or late visit.

  • Amazing ancient standing stones in very well preserved condition. If you visit please respect this. They are beautiful and have been there for 1000s of years
