After relishing Renaissance era masterpieces, ancient artefacts austere architecture in classy Cambridge, perhaps it’s time for something a bit more casual? How does this sound: a cosy little house with comfortable seating space and plenty of air? Somewhere you can rest your back and put your feet up. This is what Kettle’s Yard House and Gallery seems like at first and it probably sounds just like your house but with one major difference: everything here is a work of art! From the furniture, to the décor and, of course, the paintings that adorn the wall, everything in Kettle’s is a sample of postmodern and contemporary artwork.

It all started when Jim and Helen Ede decided to convert four small cottages into one giant house and use it as a place to display their collection of early 20th century art. . Ede acquired most of his collection from friendships he built during his days as a museum curator for the famous Tate Gallery, which is why much of his collection is full work in the British ‘avant-garde’ style. They kept an ‘Open House’ every afternoon, giving any one who wished a tour of his little gallery. In 1966, the Edes’ gave the collection and the house to the University of Cambridge and in 1970, a more modernist gallery extension was created. What makes this gallery so special is that everything has been left the way it was, back when the Edes lived within those walls. This lends a warm, personal touch to the entire experience, which makes the experience all the more enjoyable.

The museum has both permanent and temporary displays. The permanent collection includes paintings by William Congdon, Henry Moore, Joan Miro and Alfred Wallis. The house’s interior is understated and perfectly complementary to the art it nestles within its doors. There’s even a library and sofa sets where you can recline and casually seep in as much beauty as possible. Don’t miss out on this unusually down-to-earth art museum. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Cambridge itinerary 1 day.
