The Shri Shantadurga Temple on the foothills of the Kavalem village is a private temple complex run by the Goud Saraswat Brahmin Community and is dedicated to the family deity of the Brahmins. The temple structure is over 450 years old and was built during the reign of Chatrapathi Shahu Maharaj of the Marathas. The main deity of Shri Shantadurga Temple is Santeri or Shantadurga who is believed to meditate between Shiva and Vishnu. The two serpents on the deity’s hand stand for Shiva and Vishnu respectively. The pyramidal Shikaras on the facade roofs, the main hall or Sabhamandap, stained glass windows with roman arches, chandeliers, balustrated dome, Kashmir Stone built pillars and the golden palanquin are the highlights of the temple.
