A deactivated lighthouse which was officially lit in 1881 after taking more than 500 days to be constructed, the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is a historic location worth exploring. The lighthouse was once famous as “Terrible Tilly” because of the dangerous weather conditions and the risky commute for suppliers and keepers. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the lighthouse building now looks ghostly but offers spectacular views of the ocean and whales. The lighthouse is visible from neighboring coastal cities and is also a part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
