Best Time To Visit Cape Town

Cape Town enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, which means that it is fairly hot in summer and fairly cold in winter. No extremes in temperature are experienced which make it the perfect place for the perfect day at the best time of year. That is how Cape Town works, and that is why millions upon millions of visitors flock to the city every year. You must be prepared for “four seasons in one day” – where you will be basking in the sun on one side of the mountain while on the other, you will be cowering from cold and the wind.

  • Summers (December to February) – The summer season in cape town sees the most number of tourists. The beaches are sprawling with tourists and outdoor activities are on a full swing. The summer months are warm but not overwhelmingly hot with the temperatures fluctuating between 14 to 27 degrees Celsius. The summer months see a very insignificant amount of rainfall and are mostly dry.
  • Fall (March - May) – The arrival of fall drops the mercury levels and the city is painted in beautiful autumn colours. People are drawn out of the city and into the forests to indulge in camping, hiking, bonfires and other activities. The season is also the start of the annual wine harvest. The temperatures remain between 9 to 19 degrees Celsius and there is an increase in the precipitation levels. The hotels start reducing their prices to prepare for the offseason.
  • Winters (June - August) – Winters embark the arrival of low temperatures, rain showers and thunderstorms. The temperatures remain between 7 to 18 degrees Celsius with high precipitation levels of 93mm. The rainy days of winter make the most of the vibrant indoor markets, easy bookings at the city’s famous eateries and cheap accommodations.
  • Spring (September - November) – The springtime in Cape Town is bursting with colours. This is the best time to indulge in whale watching. The temperature is on the rise, fluctuating between 9 to 23 degrees Celsius and the precipitation levels go down. The hotel rates start to increase but are still attractive to many budget minded travellers.

The best time to visit Cape Town is during summer from December to February or the spring months from September to November. The summer months are the busiest in terms of events and entertainment, however, as Cape Town gets ready to draw in the tourists for the Christmas period.
