The Castle Of Good Hope is a beautiful Historic site in Cape Town. Shaped like a star it is certainly a thing of great beauty but more importantly, it is of great historic importance.
Built around 1679 this medieval fortress was a very strategic place. Used as an important military post by the Dutch it played an important role in the conflicts between the Dutch colonists and the British Invaders. Even in the later history of Cape Town, the fort has been of great significance. It has also been used as a prison.
It is now a military museum and an important venue for activities of the military in Cape Town. The exciting part of visiting this museum is the cannon ball firing that takes place periodically. The ceremonies are also quite interesting from the point of view of the tourist. History lovers will enjoy the place immensely.

This is one of the oldest , if not the oldest building in Cape Town. There is a rich history here. The mini-cannon is something that I enjoyed. I had the opportunity to light it (for a nominal donation). The only reason for the 4 stars is that the tour I experienced was only a half tour due to a function being held. I believe they should have have halved the entrance fee in this instance. Overall I will be back for another tour so I can add to this review. It is worth a visit!
So lovely! And we were fortunate enough to witness a cannon shooting. The whole castle is really big with a number of different houses and exhibits to see. They have done a really good job on preserving everything. Just be sure to give yourself at least an hour here as there is so much to see.
An absolute must see for anyone that loves history or architecture and art. It is the oldest building in South Africa first started in 1666. Get your history fix. Staff are friendly and you can just go wandering about the place. 25 rand for students not sure of normal price, but really nothing for this experience.
Great history, we had an amazing tour guide. Went over board and made sure we understood the context of everything. Be mindful of the sad stories, some are extremely sad but it’s part of the South African history.
This was one of the most exciting places to visit in cape town. It is so full of history and magic, it was such a wonderful and informative experience. I was really impressed with the affordable entrance fee (R50 for adults) which included a free guided tour of the grounds. The most impressive though was our lovely tour guide (I wish I could remember his name!!) He truly was amazing and made the whole experience come alive. He was extremely witty and very knowlegable. Also the museums and galleries were wonderful and very interesting.
