Castle Of Good Hope - Review

The Castle Of Good Hope is a beautiful Historic site in Cape Town. Shaped like a star it is certainly a thing of great beauty but more importantly, it is of great historic importance.

Built around 1679 this medieval fortress was a very strategic place. Used as an important military post by the Dutch it played an important role in the conflicts between the Dutch colonists and the British Invaders. Even in the later history of Cape Town, the fort has been of great significance. It has also been used as a prison.

It is now a military museum and an important venue for activities of the military in Cape Town. The exciting part of visiting this museum is the cannon ball firing that takes place periodically. Castle Of Good Hope, Cape Town Reviews

  • What a beautiful part of South African history. I love the castle. The guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. The entrance fee was reasonable. Two criticisms are as follows. The castle clearly doesn't serve any real military purpose anymore so the army should remove their overweight and sloppy looking servicemen. The castle should be maintained better and could do with some more period decor. It seemed to have lots of empty spaces as though it had lost all its relics over time.

  • This was one of the most exciting places to visit in cape town. It is so full of history and magic, it was such a wonderful and informative experience. I was really impressed with the affordable entrance fee (R50 for adults) which included a free guided tour of the grounds. The most impressive though was our lovely tour guide (I wish I could remember his name!!) He truly was amazing and made the whole experience come alive. He was extremely witty and very knowlegable. Also the museums and galleries were wonderful and very interesting.

  • Very interesting part of South African history. A trip to do on Day 1 of your visit as all other visits will tie up nicely. Lacking a restaurant so ensure to eat before going. Also, there is a well secured parking around the corner from the main entrance (ask military personnel). I do not advise parking on the street.

  • For those that are around cape town for the first time or short while, this is also a great place to get a background history of cape town. Good view of the mountain, open and tunnel tours offered. Can be packaged with the hop on hop off buses. Can book or just walk through, it's a nice tour sight

  • It was a really nice experience taking a small step back into time, to see how things have been preserved is really remarkable! and our Tour Guide Steven is really a well of knowledge!!!! and the atmosphere is very tranquil .... (Big Thumbs-up)
