Tassajara Zen Mountain Center located amidst the Southeast of Carmel by Sea in California is one of the oldest Buddhist Monastery in California. This monastery is located in a very isolated area nearly 26km from the main road. The road that leads to this place is very narrow and you must be careful while walking. During winter season this place is closed and only monks residing in the center stays there. In the summer season the monastery remains open for guests throughout and even guests can stay overnight. They also have hot springs which are designed in Japanese Style. You can surely pay a visit to this place once in town.

A unique place of beauty & serenity. Tasty vegetarian meals, simple cabins, hot springs, stunning scenery, and kind people (both staff & guests). If you need time off the grid to recharge, stay a few days at Tassajara. Optional Zen Buddhist dharma talks, meditation from the Zen Buddhist priests, monks of the SF Zen Center. Take a 4-wheel drive on the unpaved, steep, winding road up to the center.
Tassajara nested in the Ventana Wilderness is a very special place. Not only it is the oldest Japanese Buddhist Zen monastery in the US, it has a very spiritual, calm flowing energy. You will find many regular guests return every summer to seek solace and comfort -in the morning/evening meditations, in the rolling trails and rumbling creeks, in the soothing natural hot baths, or in the delicious and nutritious meals. It’s a true gem in the wilderness.
Another wonderful time at my training monastery. Gratitude and many bows to the monks at Tassajara ZMC!
Wonderful place. So enjoyed the food, the baths, and the practice.
If you can get here, get here. If you can stay here, stay here. You just need to come, and the rest is really easy. It is nestled as I am sure you know if you are reading this, in between some really high mountains, so it gets dark early. But it is hot during the day.
